    日本滞在中はホテルに泊まっていたのだが、朝食は日本食であった。日本人は生卵をご飯にかけ、醤油を加えて食べる習慣があるが、私は生の食べ物は嫌だったので、他のおかずだけを食べ、生卵は食べずに残していた。

    　次の日の朝食にも同じように生卵があった。眉間にしわを寄せながら、何気なしに卵を触ってみると、今日の卵は熱いではないか。周りの客の様子を見てみると、皆は普通に生卵を食べており、私の卵だけが熱を通してあるようであった。

    　私は生卵を食べないということを誰かに喋ったことは無く、ただ生卵を食べずに残しただけである。ホテルの従業員は私が生卵を食べない人間であることを見抜き、次回からは熱を加えた卵を供してくれたのである。

    　この出来事は、私が日本で最も震撼した出来事であった。日本人は敬服の念を抱かせる民族であると同時に、何と恐ろしい民族なのだろう。

    アメリカにいると、こういうことをすごく実感する。日本のサービスは本当に最高。というより、「気遣い」という文化が最高。

    アメリカだと「言われないことを何でやるの？」でおしまい。口に出して言わないことは、存在しないこと。
